Editorial Standards and How We Pick

Our editorial standards

Deal Slicks helps shoppers tell a real deal from a marketing trick. We check whether a "sale" price is really a discount, explain what makes a product worth buying, and show how to spot reviews you shouldn't trust. This page explains who writes for us, how we choose what to cover, and how we keep our recommendations honest.

Who writes and edits our content

Every article has a named writer with a profile listing their background and the categories they cover. Our editor reviews and approves every article before it is published and is responsible for its accuracy.

How we pick deals and products

  1. We check the price history. Before calling something a deal, we compare the current price with its recent price history across major retailers. If the "sale" price matches what the item usually sells for, we don't call it a deal.
  2. We compare alternatives. Every recommendation is weighed against similar products at similar prices, and we explain who each option is best for.
  3. We read what owners say. We read customer reviews and owner discussions, look for recurring praise and complaints, and summarize them in our own words. We quote briefly, link to the source, and tell you roughly how many reviews we read.
  4. We say when we've tested something ourselves. If we've used or tested a product first-hand, we say so and show what we found. If we haven't, we don't imply that we have.
  5. We list the downsides. Every recommendation includes its drawbacks and the kind of shopper it isn't right for.

How we judge reviews

Fake and incentivized reviews are common, so we treat star ratings with caution. We look for detailed reviews from verified buyers, give recent reviews more weight than old ones, and flag patterns that suggest paid or fake reviews. We never write, buy or alter reviews, and we never present other people's reviews as our own testing.

Sources

We link to the retailers, manufacturers, price histories and independent sources behind our claims. Product specs come from manufacturers and are checked against retailer listings. Safety and recall information comes from official sources such as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

How we use AI

We may use AI tools to help with research or first drafts. A human editor checks prices, facts and claims and edits every article before publication. We never use AI to invent reviews, testimonials or test results.

Keeping content current

Prices and availability change fast. Each article shows when it was published and last updated, and we check prices in our main guides at least quarterly. A deal that has expired is marked as expired or removed.

How we make money, and our independence

Deal Slicks is free to read. We earn money from advertising and, where noted, from affiliate links: if you buy through a link, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Advertisers and retailers can't pay for a recommendation, a better position or a positive review, and they don't see our articles before publication. Sponsored content, if we publish it, is clearly labeled.
